Varexon 35mm F2.8 - Barrel

Varexon 35mm F2.8 tested. A vintage lens that is not well known and has poor quality.

I invite you to read my evaluations regarding the Varexon 35mm F2.8 lens. It’s a fairly bright fixed lens that, as I explained on the dedicated page. I received it for free.

Intrigued, I wanted to try it out in recent weeks. The evaluations that I express below refer to the specimen in my hands.

The lens is in good/excellent condition. Mechanically, it has no defects. The optics are clean, without any scratches or mold of any kind. I had the opportunity to try it with two of my cameras, and the results are essentially identical.

The lens is made entirely of metal, in two different colors. Externally, it’s not the usual black common to many modern lenses. The aperture ring is set without intermediate stops, and this in my opinion is a limitation. Regarding focus, the specimen that I’ve is lacking in detail definition. Not sharp at all.

I used an adapter for NEX/M42 that I had previously used with other lenses to try out the Varexon 35mm F2.8 lens. But unfortunately, I only obtained a few acceptable quality photos. While I don’t want to express only negative opinions. I cannot recommend to buy this lens, as I see no valid reason to do so.

Based on my evaluations, I’m not able to estimate its purchase value. Going forward, I plan to test lenses from different manufacturers to find better alternatives.
