Cleaning lenses slow notes

Good morning everyone, and welcome back to my personal site. Thanks to those who have the patience to follow my posts. A warm welcome to those who are here for the first time.

Lenses certainly represent the most important part of the photographic kit, given that they clearly contribute to the quality and sharpness of the photographs. Below my personal suggestions related cleaning lenses, my personal slow notes.

It is therefore immediately evident that it is vitally important to buy the right lenses to obtain high quality images in your photographs. Cleaning lenses, it’s in my opinion very important, so read these slow notes. Especially to maintain safe and secure for a long time VINTAGE lenses.

But remember that an even more important factor is to pay the utmost care when using these components, to avoid unpleasant inconveniences over time.
Precisely for this reason, I thought I would write this post where I will explain in detail how to maintain and clean a photographic lens.

The photographic lens is an extremely delicate instrument and must be treated with the attention it deserves to maintain its correct functionality.

The “rules” listed in this paragraph are mainly common sense rules, if they seem too banal you can move on to the following paragraph.

How to clean a camera lens

Try not to accidentally knock your optics and above all not to drop them. When you are not photographing, protect the front lens with the lens cap or lens hood, this will prevent possible scratches.

If your lens is set to “automatic autofocus”, do not under any circumstances rotate the focus adjustment ring, you could seriously damage this function.

The optics are NOT tropicalized, protect them from atmospheric agents. You can simply wrap them in a plastic bag when photographing (in case of real need, of course).

If you do photography sessions in sandy/dusty places… Be careful of the wind and small particles that could settle on the lens.

When should the lens be cleaned ?

Generally, to be on the safe side, I prefer to clean my lenses before each photo session. But it’s not a rule.
The important thing is that you clean before the dirt on the lens causes problems with your photographs.

Dust, fingerprints and smudges are just some of the possible causes of a deterioration in the quality of your shots due to impurities present on the lens.

How to clean a reflex lens: What to use

A microfibre cloth or special papers for cleaning the lenses.
An air pump.
An acrylic brush.
Some lens cleaning fluid.

First, I clean the barrel (the outside) of lens.

I use the blower (manual air pump) to blow away impurities. Then use carefully the brush to capture stubborn dust using electrostatic energy.

I remove the front cap and carefully observe the condition of the lens (glass). Once the front part is clean, I remove the back part and do the same careful check.

If there is only dust on top of them, I try using the blower and only then the brush.
I recommend delicacy in operations.
If in addition to the dust there are stains or fingerprints, for optimal cleaning I also use lens liquid.
I put a couple of drops on the microfibre cloth (or on the appropriate paper) and wipe it. VERY delicately trying not to leave streaks.
If there are still any impurities between the lens and the edge, I use a cotton swab to remove them.

Once the lenses (rear and front) are clean, lens is almost ready. There is only one more operation left, cleaning the two lens caps. Don’t underestimate this step, most of the dirt usually forms in these small components.

How NOT to clean a camera lens
Although it is a very common practice, try not to remove dust and impurities by blowing on the lens.

I hope that the above can be useful to you in some way. Personally in this way I can always have the lenses ready for use.

Until next post, stay tuned for new information and news.

See you soon !
