“Wildflower Nature Journey 08.24” – Episode 8.

Muscari botryoides. This flower, like many others, was photographed in countryside areas, in the undergrowth. It is an endemic flower of our area. Native to Mediterranean region, particularly Southern Europe. Is a bulbous perennial plant of the genus Muscari and one of a number of species and genera known as grape hyacinth. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant.

Grape hyacinth, is common name. The name botryoides is derived from the appearance of a miniature cluster of grapes. Flowers: from Late April to the end of May (Lombardy region – Italy). Flowers are small, urn-shaped, tightly packed on a spike, resembling a cluster of grapes. Colors can range from blue to violet, and there are white cultivars as well. Flowers attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

Planting: Bulbs should be planted in the fall, about 7-10 cm deep and 5-8 cm apart. Bulbs can be toxic if ingested, so care should be taken around pets and children. Often used in borders, rock gardens, and as ground cover. They are also popular for naturalizing in lawns and under trees.

This flower is quite easily traceable in the undergrowth areas of our plain. It grows in small plots that color the ground intense blue. Therefore making it easily visible. It’s difficult to make a ranking obviously, because there is a reason to love all flowers. But this is certainly one of the flowers that I personally prefer.
