β€œWildflower Nature Journey 09.24” – Episode 9.

Lotus corniculatus. This flower, like many others, was photographed in countryside areas, in open spaces, in fields, along the edges of paths… It is an endemic flower of our area. Native to Eurasia and North Africa region, particularly widespread and well distributed in our zone. Especially in lowland area. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, similar in appearance to some clovers. The name β€˜bird’s foot’ refers to the appearance of the seed pods on their stalk. It is often used as forage and is widely used as food for livestock due to its nonbloating properties.

Common bird’s-foot trefoil, is common name. Five leaflets are present, but with the central three held conspicuously above the others, hence the use of the name β€˜trefoil’. Flowers: from Late May to the end of summer (Lombardy region – Italy).

Planting: The height of the plant is variable, from 5 to 20 centimetres, occasionally more where supported by other plants; the stems can reach up to 50 cm long. It is typically sprawling at the height of the surrounding grassland. Can survive fairly close grazing, trampling, and mowing. Most often found in sandy soils. The flowers develop into small pea-like pods or legumes.

Easily visible given the bright yellow color that characterizes it. Covers open lawn areas and/or path edges quite easily. A double-flowered variety is grown as an ornamental plant. Regularly included as a component of wildflower mixes in Europe. It can also prevent soil erosion and provide a good habitat for wildlife. In the traditional medicine of the Sannio region of Italy, people used diluted infusions to treat anxiety, insomnia, and exhaustion.
