Wildflower Nature Journey 12.24 – A journey through the enchanting world of our local wildflowers this season. From the delicate alpine Edelweiss to the regal Turk’s cap lily, let’s unravel the mysteries and marvels of these untamed beauties that grace our landscape. “Wildflower Nature Journey 12.24” – Episode 12.

Veronica chamaedrys. This flower, like many others, was photographed in countryside areas, in open spaces, in fields, along the edges of paths… Naturally the photographs refer to the spring period. It is an endemic flower of our areas. Native to Europe, it’s widely diffused widely spread especially in the Po Valley and in low hill areas. It is found on other continents as an introduced species.

Germander speedwell or Bird’s-eye speedwell, The specific name chamaedrys is a combining form meaning “low” or “on the ground” derived from ancient Greek. Is a herbaceous perennial species of flowering plant in the plantain family Plantaginaceae. The flowers are deep blue with a zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical) four-lobed corolla, 8–12 mm wide. The capsules are wider than they are long. an grow to 20 cm tall, but is frequently shorter, with stems that are hairy only along two opposite sides. The leaves are in opposite pairs, triangular and crenate, sessile or with short petioles.

Note: Veronica chamaedrys has been used in traditional Austrian herbal medicine internally (as tea) for disorders of the nervous system, respiratory tract, cardiovascular system, and metabolism. Folk medicine attributed astringent, healing, expectorant, stomachic and tonic properties to this plant, however it must be used with caution as it can produce diarrhea. In particular, use the infusion of the floral tops.
